Shapiro Herbert Marcuse was born in Berlin to a Jewish family and served in the German Army, caring for horses in Berlin during the First World War. He then became a member of a Soldiers' Council that participated in the aborted socialist Spartacist uprising. Notably, the uprising was crushed by the Freikorps, a proto-fascist militia precursor to the Herbert Marcuse, 1898–1979, was a member of the Frankfurt Institute for Social Research. He was forced to leave Germany in 1933, eventually settling in the USA. His classic studies of capitalist society, Eros and Civilization and One-Dimensional Man, were important influences on the New Left of the 1960s and 1970s and his libertarian socialism remains an important intellectual resource.

For journalist Matt Taibbi, Herbert Marcuse is a pseudo-intellectual at fault for much of what ails the contemporary left. But the real Marcuse was a serious thinker who remained committed to socialism and working-class struggle.
