How Airbnb’s data discovery tool changed my life. In my career, I’ve been fortunate enough to work on some fun problems: I studied flow mathematics during my degree at MIT, worked on incremental models, and on an open source project.

This framework calculates metrics daily, feeds those metrics to reporting, experimentation, and anomaly detection applications, makes the searchable in Airbnb's Dataportal, and abstracts data lifecycle management issues such as schema evolution and backfilling. Neo4j integrated well with all of Airbnb’s preferred programming languages, while also allowing them to enrich search rankings by taking advantage of the graph topology. Everyday they push data from Hive into the Neo4j graph database – connecting their siloed data from a relationships perspective – to facilitate quick, highly relevant contextual search results.
